To Think Differently or When Wisdom of the Crowd is not Wisdom

An Example of a card from Ash experiment Image Source: Wikipedia In a post in my other blog (written in Hebrew ), I wrote that sometimes my opinion differed from the majority opinion. Sometimes it also differed, from leading experts opinions in the field or the topic. In those cases, I acted according to my opinion and not according to the Majority view. Wisdom of the Crowd is a method used more frequently than before. The essence of Wisdom of the Crowd, is assembling many non-expert opinions as  information supporting Decision making .   The classic usage of Wisdom of the Crowd is for estimation of quantified problem, e.g. a  Taurus   weight. However, usage of  Wisdom of the Crowd could be misleading.  In this post I discuss two factors, which oppose usage of Wisdom of the Crowd, including few examples.  Factor 1: Conformity and Social Behaviour The illustration in the heading of this post, depicts an easy task of distin...

Will Microsoft Survive until 2021? - Revisited

A year ago I publishes a post titled: Will Microsoft Survive Until 2021? . According to the post, the probability in 2011, that Microsoft will survive until 2021, was lower than the probability assigned in previous post written in 2008 , for its survival  for ten years, i.e. until 2018. Some problems mentioned in the 2011 post were its position in the Smart Phone market and it Windows Operating System .  Recently, Microsoft reported Loss after a Write-Down .  The Loss was attributed to its ill-fated acquisition of an Online Advertising company. However, Microsoft's Windows business revenues f ell 13% in the fourth fiscal quarter ended June 30th.   The Bottom Line: Although the propability that Microsoft will survive for 10 years is still high, this probability in 2012 is lower than it was in 2011.

I will start my post by quoting Garner Group 's Magic Quadrant for Application Infrastructure for Back-End Application Integration Projects 2Q07 first Caution on Sun Microsystems : "Sun's sales force was ill-prepared for the SeeBeyond acquisition, which  significantly hurt SeeBeyond's momentum. The sales force has been trained, but Sun must rebuild momentum in a market where growth is flattening". In sumary, according to Gartner Group Sun sales force was not prepared for the SeeBeyond acquisition based on Seebeyond's SOA products. As a result SeeBeyond's momentum in that market disappeared and should be rebuilt (Sun lost momentum in the SOA market). Why is this quote from the Research Note, which I read freely from BEA' s Web Site, so important? It is important because it describes a Pattern. Similar statements could be written about previous Sun initiatives and acquisitions: 1. Sun invented and built the Java programming lan...
